The City of South Gate, California will hold an election for City Council on March 3, 2020. Three seats are open and there are six qualified candidates on the ballot.

Maria R. Davila is currently serving as a Council Member of the South Gate City Council. She was elected on January 28, 2003 and re-elected to for year terms in 2003, 2007, 2011, ans 2015. She served as Mayor for one term in 2017. She previously served as Mayor in 2006 and 2011. She has attended schools in South Gate since she was a child, and has been a resident of the city for 35 years. She has volunteered as a member of the School Site Council, Title 1, Bilingual Committee, Magnet Representative and Healthy Start Parent Representative. She has served on multiple boards and is Chair of the Southeast Cities School Coalition and is President of the South Gate Multicultural Women’s Club. In 2006 she was awarded the Woman of the Year Award by former Senator Martha Escutia.
