About: The Bakersfield Californian derived from The Weekly Courier, which was the first newspaper in Kern County, published in 1866. Following the Gold Rush, the publication was moved from Havilah to Bakersfield and became The Kern County Weekly Courier. After several name mergers the paper became the Bakersfield Californian in 1907. For decades, the publication was located in Downtown Bakersfield, at a site which has since been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The newspaper is currently operated by Sound California News Media Inc. which also publishes Bakersfield Life, Delano Record, Kern Business Journal, Tehachapi News and The Voice.
