SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)- Restaurants in San Francisco will soon be required to post the results of their latest health inspection through a new color-coded placard system, the city’s Department of Public Health announced Wednesday.

The new system aims to help customers make informed choices about where they eat and will put San Francisco on par with other Bay Area cities that have already implemented a similar system.

The new system, approved by the city’s Board of Supervisors back in November, is set to launch sometime this spring and would require restaurants to post the placards outside of their window or door.

Green means the restaurant has passed the inspection and yellow means it’s conditionally passed, with two or more critical issues identified that must be corrected. A red placard means the restaurant didn’t pass its inspection and has been temporarily closed, pending a further inspection.

All of the city’s 7,000 food facilities will be subject to the new placard system, including restaurants, fast food facilities, food trucks, bakeries, caterers and cafeterias.

The ratings will be issued following routine health inspections, in which an inspector will be looking at critical factors that may contribute to food-borne illness, including inadequate hand washing, cross contamination, vermin and improper food temperatures.
