LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu filed a motion today to explore options of creating a 20,000-square-foot safe overnight parking lot in Van Nuys for homeless people.
“Solving homelessness takes more than just one kind of solution. We need bridge housing, permanent supportive housing, services, and safe parking,” Ryu said.
Ryu’s motion seeks a feasibility study on creating the safe parking lot, located at 15380 Oxnard St.

The lot is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with a long-term lease to the city of Los Angeles, according to Ryu’s office.
In Ryu’s Council District 4, which expands over the Hollywood Hills and Sherman Oaks, he said there are an estimated 262 people living in their cars and 74 in RVs. The councilman is also asking for $266,000 to complete the safe parking lot and hygiene facilities. Ryu said the lot would be near bathrooms and outreach services.
Ryu’s motion will first be heard by the City Council’s Homelessness and Poverty Committee for further consideration.
