The investigation is continuing today into the fatal shooting of a man with a gun by police in Huntington Beach … just as the U.S. Open of Surfing was wrapping for the day. Shortly after 3 p-m Saturday … officers fatally shot the man just south of the city’s iconic pier. Police said he was armed with a gun … and was non-compliant to the multiple commands from officers. He was shot and taken to a hospital … where he was pronounced dead. A gun was later recovered at the scene. It was unclear whether the man was involved with the surfing event.

A man in his 30s was killed in a single-vehicle crash this morning on the San Diego Freeway near Encino. It occurred at 2-45-A-M on the northbound freeway at Mulholland Drive. C-H-P investigators said the crash involved a gray or black sedan that was discovered on the right shoulder of the freeway in an unpaved area. The northbound numbers 5 and 6 lanes were closed while the investigation continued.

A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer is nursing a broken leg suffered in a crash on the 1-oh-5 Freeway in Downey. The crash occurred just after 8-P-M Saturday on the eastbound side of the roadway at Bellflower Boulevard. The injured officer was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Lynwood for treatment. The other driver stopped at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

Long Beach police say they have arrested four men suspected in the gang-related shooting deaths of two victims over the past couple of days. The victims were identified as 22-year-old Rafael Araiza … fatally wounded in his car on June 24th … and Reginald English … a homeless man found dead on a sidewalk on June 25th. Detectives believe the two murders are related and will present the case to the District Attorney’s Office this week.

Los Angeles County health officials are encouraged that higher vaccination rates … and safety precautions during Labor Day celebrations … appears to have helped prevent the type of coronavirus surge the Southland has experienced following other holidays during the pandemic. More COVID-19 protection is also available now that booster shots of the Pfizer vaccination are now officially available in Los Angeles County for select residents … and those in higher-risk groups. On Saturday … the county reported 1-thousand-6-hundred-2 new cases of COVID-19 … and 29 additional deaths. Hospitalizations have also continued to decline … dropping 17 percent over the previous week’s numbers.

The three-day 46th annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach wraps up today with the main IndyCar race … followed by a stadium Super Trucks race. This marks the first time the event has been held after being cancelled in 20-20 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Grand Prix is usually held in April … but was moved to September after the decision was made to resume this year. Proof of vaccination … or a negative COVID test … is required to enter … and masking is required for all individuals. Rapid coronavirus testing is also being offered at all major entryways to the race circuit.

It will be partly cloudy today in the greater Los Angeles area … with southwest winds of up to 15 miles per hour in some areas during the afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 60s to mid 70s at the beaches … and in the mid 70s to mid 80s inland. Air quality will range from good to unhealthy.
