Orange County has reported 213 new COVID-19 cases … continuing a trend this week of rising diagnoses. The county also reported 11 more coronavirus-related deaths. The county’s death toll is now 1-thousand-434 and its cumulative caseload is 57-thousand-848. The number of hospitalizations related to the virus ticked down from 174 Wednesday to 168 yesterday … with the number of intensive care unit patients dropping from 66 to 56.

L-A County has reported a staggering 36-hundred new coronavirus cases … but the large number is attributed to the resolution of a technical glitch that delayed a large number of test results over the past several days. The county also announced 18 new coronavirus-related deaths … pushing the overall total to 6-thousand-956. As of yesterday … there were 777 people hospitalized due to the virus in L-A County … up from 758 on Wednesday. County public health director Barbara Ferrer says there have been “concerning” upticks in cases in recent weeks … delaying our move to a less-restrictive tier of the state’s economic reopening roadmap.

A judge says he is … for now … withholding a decision on the scope of a hearing on whether Grace Community Church and its pastor should be held in contempt for continuing to hold indoor services. L-A County Superior Court Judge Mitchell -L- Beckloff could fine both the Sun Valley house of worship and Pastor John MacArthur 3-thousand dollars if he agrees with Los Angeles County health officials that they had no legal excuse for not abiding by his orders by holding an indoor service and for staging an outdoor service without requiring attendees to wear masks and observe social distancing … all on September 13th … three days after the preliminary injunction was issued. About 3-thousand people attended the indoor service … according to the county. MacArthur says that as of Septemer 23rd … no coronavirus cases had developed among congregation members during nine indoor services. The judge has asked for briefings from both sides before the next hearing on November 13th.

A plan designed to create a faster and more reliable bus network with more routes has been approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Agency Board of Directors. The NextGen Bus Plan will schedule buses to arrive every five to 10 minutes at stops for 83 percent of current riders compared to 48 percent who are currently serviced … according to Metro officials. The plan is to have most of the new bus routes implemented by June … and all route changes are planned to be in service by December 20-21. The plan prioritizes bus travel on the county’s busiest streets.

The eastbound Foothill Freeway will be closed between the Golden State Freeway and Roxford Street starting at 10 tonight and continuing through 5 Monday morning for paving work. Also closed will be connectors from the Golden State Freeway to the eastbound Foothill Freeway and eastbound Yarnell Street on- and off-ramps. Residents and local businesses located near the freeway may experience noise … vibrations and dust associated with construction activities during the 55-hour closure. The work is part of a project replacing all lanes of the Foothill Freeway with new pavement from Wheatland Avenue in Lake View Terrace to the Golden State Freeway.

Sheriff’s detectives are still searching today for a 34-year-old man who went missing from unincorporated East L-A … more than two months ago. Manuel Sandoval was last seen about noon on August 13th near his home in the 600 block of Williamson Avenue. Sandoval is Hispanic … 5 feet 3 … about 150 pounds … with brown eyes and short brown curly hair. Anyone with information about Sandoval’s whereabouts is urged to call the sheriff’s Missing Persons Unit at 323-890-5500 or 911. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.

It will be mostly cloudy today … with patchy drizzle expected this morning … on an otherwise partly cloudy day. Highs will be around 70 degrees in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley … the lower 70s in the San Gabriel Valley … the mid 70s in the Santa Clarita Valley … and around 80 in the Antelope Valley. Air quality will be in the good range in the Antelope Valley but only moderate everywhere else in L-A County … and everywhere in Orange County.
