U-S-C is halting all social activities at campus fraternities while the university investigates reports of people being drugged and possibly sexually assaulted during parties hosted by Sigma Nu and other frat houses. In less than a month, campus police have received at least seven such reports. Sigma Nu’s chapter president … Ryan Schiff-i-lea … has been identified as a suspect by Los Angeles police, though he hasn’t been arrested. In light of the alleged crimes … some protesters at U-S-C have called for an end to the university’s fraternity system.

A shooting on Normandie Avenue has left a boy dead, and the shooter is still at large. It took place around 9 p-m Saturday in the 96-hundred block of Normandie Avenue … in an unincorporated area of the county bordering South Los Angeles. The boy’s age was not disclosed, but he was described as a male juvenile. A man was also wounded in the shooting and was treated by paramedics at the scene. No suspect description was available. Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call sheriff’s homicide detectives at 3-2-3 … 8-9-0 … 55-hundred, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 8-hundred … 2-2-2-TIPS.

Two motorcyclists were killed within minutes of each other this morning in two unrelated crashes in Los Angeles County. The first death occurred at 5:24 a-m on the northbound Golden State Freeway in Granada Hills, north of the 2-10 Freeway. At around 5:30 a-m, another deadly crash occurred on the eastbound 10 Freeway at Via Verde in San Dimas.

The Webb Schools in Claremont have received a 1-hundred-million dollar gift from an alumnus who wants to remain anonymous, in what school officials are calling the largest donation ever made to an independent high school west of the Mississippi. The Webb Schools are two private schools for grades 9 through 12, and include the only accredited museum of paleontology on a high school campus. They’re celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first school’s founding next year, and the donation will go along way toward the schools’ goal of generating at least 2-hundred-million dollars by 20-25.

Parts of the Southland experienced a mild earthquake this morning. The temblor struck near the Boyle Heights area at one minute after 7 and was originally estimated to have a magnitude of 3-ppoint-9 … but that was later downgraded to 3-point-6. Some shaking was felt in the Long Beach, Maywood, East Los Angeles and Commerce communities, but there were no reports of injuries or damage.

“Dune” has opened atop the box office with 40-million dollars. The science fiction epic … which is also available for home viewing on the HBO Max streaming service … beat out last week’s top-grossing film, “Halloween Kills,” which took in 14-and-a-half-million dollars Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada. Third place went to the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” which made nearly 12-million dollars in its third week in theaters.

It’s cloudy and mild today, with temperatures in the 60s and lower 70s. A one-day storm is headed toward the Southland, with rain and colder temperatures expected over much of the area Monday.
