For the first time in more than a year, there will be fans at Staples Center for a Laker game when the N-B-A champs take on the Boston Celtics tonight. … The Lakers will be the first major Southland sports franchise to benefit after the state and L-A County eased COVID-19 restrictions to again allow spectators at INDOOR events. … Attendance will be limited to about 2-thousand — and fans will have to prove they’re fully vaccinated OR have had a negative coronavirus test within 72 hours of tip-off. They’ll also have to follow a wide range of COVID safety measures, including wearing a mask … and eating and drinking ONLY in designated areas — not at their seats.

L-A County health officials report the number of people hospitalized for coronavirus is back above the 5-hundred mark — reaching 5-hundred-18 … up from 4-hundred-93 on Tuesday. The county reported an additional 57 COVID-19 deaths, while Long Beach added one — bringing the cumulative county death toll during the pandemic to more than 23-thousand. Another 4-hundred-11 cases were reported by the county, while Long Beach added 38. The total case count in the county for the pandemic stands at more than 1-point-2-2-7 million.

Meanwhile, the Orange County COVID numbers show 89 new cases and 13 additional deaths. The cumulative case count now stands at more than 2-hundred-52 thousand … with the death toll at more than 48-hundred. … Hospitalizations increased from 1-hundred-15 on Tuesday to 1-hundred-22 yesterday.

Everyone age 16 and over will be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine in L-A County starting today — as the county joins the state in lowering the age restriction. Some other jurisdictions — including the cities of L-A and Long Beach — have already been offering the shots to everyone 16 and older. … Countywide, there are believed to be about 5 million people in the newly eligible 16 to 49 age group. … People 50 and up had already been eligible.

After a year-long pandemic closure, Universal Studios Hollywood will reopen for annual and season pass holders today — with the general public welcomed back starting Friday. Park officials say most rides will be operational, but some attractions will remain shuttered to comply with health restrictions. Face coverings and other safety measures will be required for all visitors … and capacity will be limited 25 percent.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in L-A County is up a half-cent to just over 3-dollars-98 cents — one day after remaining unchanged. The hike pushed the average price to its highest amount since November 19th of 20-19. … Meanwhile, the Orange County average price is up one-tenth of a cent to just over 3-dollars-95 cents. That’s its highest level since November 16th of 20-19.

It will be cloudy around the Southland this morning, then partly cloudy. Highs will be in the lower-to-mid-60s at the beaches … around 70 inland and in the San Gabriel Valley … the mid-60s to lower-70s in the San Fernando and Antelope valleys … and the lower-70s in the Santa Clarita Valley. Air quality will be in the good to moderate range.
