…INCREASING MONSOONAL MOISTURE WITH A THREAT OF SHOWERS AND SLIGHT CHANCE

OF THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY…

…SLIGHT CHANCE OF AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS ON TUESDAY…

.DISCUSSION…

An upper level high pressure system centered over Nevada will continue to bring moist

easterly flow aloft across Southwest California through Monday. Later this afternoon

and evening, there will be a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms across

Los Angeles county.

An upper level low pressure system with deeper monsoonal moisture and elevated instability

will move westward from the desert Southwest into Southwest California later tonight into

Monday. This system will bring a threat of more widespread showers and a slight chance of

thunderstorms to areas south of Point Conception from later tonight through Monday, with a

slight chance of showers and thunderstorms reaching north of Point Conception by Monday

afternoon and evening. Due to the ample moisture associated with this system, any thunderstorms

that develop later tonight through Monday will likely bring wetting rains and gusty winds,

however there is always the threat of isolated dry lighting strikes on the periphery of storms.

Rainfall amounts are expected to be widely varying, but are generally expected to remain below

0.50 inches. Locally higher rainfall totals are possible across the mountains of Los Angeles

and Ventura counties as well as the Antelope Valley. These areas will have the greatest threat

for brief heavy downpours later tonight into Monday, bringing a slight risk of flash flooding,

as well as the possibility of minor debris flows in the recent burn areas. There will generally

be a drying trend on Tuesday, however lingering monsoonal moisture and instability will bring

a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms across the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura

counties, as well as the Antelope Valley.
