`Dune’ Opens Atop Box Office With $40 Million

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – “Dune” opened with $40 million to lead all films at the box office this weekend, according to industry estimates released today.

The science fiction epic — a remake of a 1984 film — beat out last week’s top-grossing film, “Halloween Kills,” which took in $14.5 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.

It was a particularly impressive opening since “Dune” is also available for home viewing on the HBO Max streaming service.

Third place went to the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” which made $11.8 million in its third week in theaters.

“Venom: Let There be Carnage” was fourth with $9.1 million in its fourth week in theaters, followed by the animated family film “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” which opened with $7.3 million.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Addams Family 2” ($4.3 million), “The Last Duel” ($2.1 million), “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($2 million), “The French Dispatch” ($1.3 million) and “Free Guy” ($258,000).
