Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica is in the process of getting a new look.
The plan termed “Promenade 3.0” was approved to move forward by the Santa Monica city council. The proposed project is – comprised of two design firms: Rios Clementi Hale Studios and Gale and engineering firm KPFF.
Having taken detailed information on how visitors to the Promenade act, three ideas have been proposed:
–Improve, leaving the existing Promenade the same while making small adjustments, for example raising the roadway at select locations.
–Adapt, has more arduous changes to the Promenade, like eliminating curbs entirely on the property of the Promenade to increase foot traffic.
–Transform, the third alternative seems to be the boldest concept presented. This plan would involve removing all existing pavement and replacing it, with new additions such as “speed tables” for visitors.
While there has not been a formal vote on the new plan the city is very much in support of the new project as they believe it will increase visitor traffic.
An open house has been scheduled on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the Santa Monica Police Department substation on the 1400 block of the Promenade, to discuss the new plans and voice opinions.
