Construction has started on a supportive housing complex for homeless residents of Los Angeles. Located on the corner of Imperial Highway and Broadway Avenue in South LA, the once-vacant lot will soon be transformed into a 5 story shipping container high-rise apartments.
Developed by Clifford Beers Housing and American Family Housing and designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, the complex, called “Isla de Los Angeles,” will have 54 one-bedroom units each constructed out of three modular containers.
The ambitious $34 million project is being funded by Measure HHH, which was passed in 2016, setting aside $1.2 billion for the creation of homeless housing.
All residents of the complex will have access to onsite necessary services, including job training, mental health services, counseling, and life skills workshops.
The complex is slated to open in November 2020.
