Alice Rohrwacher’s Oscar-nominated short film “Le Pupille” streaming on Disney+ is a delightfully cheeky fable about a Catholic orphanage for girls during WWII. The story follows a young pupil, Serafina, who defies the religious interpretation of benevolence. Cuarón initiated and produced the film, granting Rohrwacher total creative freedom. She has since enjoyed the unfamiliar attention of the Academy Awards, noting that her life and work are very far from Hollywood.
