The City of South Gate, California will hold an election for City Council on March 3, 2020. Three seats are open and there are six qualified candidates on the ballot.

Maria Del Pillar Avalos is a candidate for South Gate City Council. She is a teacher who was raised in South Gate where she has lived for 40 years. She served as a member of the Community Advisory Committee and is an elected delegate to the Los Angeles County Central Committee. She graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Cal State University Fullerton, and has an M.A. in Education/Teaching Credential and an M.S. in Counseling. She wants to advocate to support local infrastructure, increase social programs for families and seniors, and promote public safety and housing programs.

This candidate does not have a campaign website and/or social media page listed.

Every elected official and public employee who makes or influences governmental decisions is required to submit a Statement of Economic Interest, also known as the Form 700. The Form 700 provides transparency and ensures accountability in two ways:

1. It provides necessary information to the public about an official’s personal financial interests to ensure that officials are making decisions in the best interest of the public and not enhancing their personal finances.

2. It serves as a reminder to the public official of potential conflicts of interest so the official can abstain from making or participating in governmental decisions that are deemed conflicts of interest.
