Woman hit by bullet during Beverly Hills restaurant robbery

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Robbers stole a watch worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from a man eating at a noted Beverly Hills restaurant on Thursday, and a scuffle led to gunfire that wounded a bystander, police and witnesses said.

The holdup took place shortly after 2 p.m. at Il Pastaio, which is popular with celebrities. Three men approached a man eating at an outdoor table and demanded his watch, police and the victim said.

One man had a gun and he “”put it in my head,“ the man, who identified himself only as “Shy,” told KNBC-TV.

“He said give me the watch,” Shy said.

Drew Hancock, who was sitting at another table with his girlfriend, told KNBC-TV that some kind of scuffle broke out between some men. At first, he thought it was a drunken fight.

“I stood up because I’m a big guy and people generally calm down when I’m around,” he said. “I immediately turned toward my girlfriend and as I was throwing her and her friend through the doorway, there were shots.”

Hancock said he heard a shot, then three more. One struck his girlfriend.

“She got a ricochet in the back of her calf” but wasn’t seriously hurt, Hancock said.

TV reports showed the woman, a bandage around her calf, talking on her cellphone as she was wheeled on a gurney into an ambulance. Her injury wasn’t life-threatening, according to a police statement.

Police said a second woman suffered “physical injury” but wasn’t shot and was treated at the scene.

Ran Ma was standing in line waiting for a table when the shots rang out.

“Everyone started running in every direction,” Ma told Variety. “I dropped behind a tree. I was in high heels. I’m not going to get very far in four-inch Louboutins.”

The robbers dropped the gun and ran off, authorities said.

Shy estimated the value of his watch at $500,000, although that couldn’t immediately be confirmed because police didn’t immediately announce what was stolen.

There have been about a half-dozen robberies in Beverly Hills and bordering areas in recent weeks involving victims wearing expensive watches and jewelry. But it wasn’t immediately clear if the latest robbery was related to the others.
