Teacher arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting student

CHICO, Calif. (AP) — A school teacher in Northern California was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a former student, police said.

Officers began an investigation two weeks ago against Jennifer Lynn Smith, a teacher with the Chico Unified School District, after a former student went to authorities to report Smith had sexually abused her while she was a student at the school, the Chico Police Department said in a statement.

Detectives arrested Smith, 50, on multiple counts of sexually assaulting a minor. She was booked at the Butte County jail in Oroville on Thursday, the department said. It was not immediately clear if Smith has an attorney who can speak on her behalf.

Detectives are investigating the case and have information that there may be other people who know of the allegations made by the student or of other incidents involving Smith, the department said.

They asked anyone with information to contact detectives at the Chico Police Department.

The Chico Unified School District said that school officials are legally prohibited from commenting on any pending disciplinary action but that they are cooperating fully with the investigation.

“The teacher will be immediately placed on administrative leave and will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” the school district said in a statement without mentioning Smith by name.

The district said officials were not aware of any additional allegations.

“CUSD has no greater priority than the safety of our students. We do not tolerate conduct from any individual that compromises student safety or betrays the trust placed in our professionals,” it said.
