Los Angeles school district purchases 10 all-electric buses

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified School District has purchased 10 all-electric school buses in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint.

The school system previously had one electric bus, the district said in its announcement Monday.

“A single electric bus will save more than $10,000 annually in lower maintenance costs as compared with a traditional diesel bus and reduce greenhouse gases by 54,000 pounds each year,” Superintendent Austin Beutner said in a statement.

The buses can travel 155 miles on a charge and have integrated wheelchair lifts, the district said.

The purchase was partly funded by the California Energy Commission’s school bus replacement program.

The LionC buses were manufactured by Lion Electric, which previously supplied all-electric zero emission buses to Twin Rivers Unified School District in Sacramento.

More than 300 all-electric school buses have been delivered in North America, according to the company.
