Californians urged to conserve power amid high heat

FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) — California’s power grid operator called for voluntary conservation of electricity Thursday as high heat gripped the state.

The California Independent System Operator issued a Flex Alert from 3 p.m. due to an expected increase in electricity demand, primarily from use of air conditioning.

Late afternoon and early evening is when the grid is most stressed and solar power production falls.

The Flex Alert was lifted at 10 p.m.

“Thank you for your conservation efforts!” the operation tweeted.

In mid-August, a heat wave strained the grid to the point that the operator ordered utilities to implement rolling blackouts.

The heat is being produced by a ridge of high pressure covering the entire West and extending into Alaska, the National Weather Service said.

Numerous daily heat records were set Thursday. Downtown Los Angeles reached 101, one degree above the previous record for the day set in 2008. San Diego’s 97 broke the 1965 record of 93. Downtown Sacramento topped 90. It was the 110th time this year that the city registered 90 or above, tying a 1984 record, according to the National Weather Service.
