SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An Oakland man was convicted of mailing bombs that exploded and injured two people in a botched revenge plot, federal authorities said Wednesday.

Ross Laverty, 59, is facing at least 20 years in prison, the U.S. attorney’s office announced.

Prosecutors said DNA evidence tied Laverty to two package bombs that were mailed to homes in East Palo Alto and Alameda in the fall of 2017.

“In addition to his intended victims, Laverty put others, including postal workers and mail carriers in grave danger,” U.S. Attorney David L. Anderson said.

Laverty intended one bomb for a San Mateo County corrections officer who had strip-searched him in 2014 while Laverty was in jail for drug possession, prosecutors said.

However, Laverty actually posted the bomb to another man who had the same name as the corrections officer.

“The victim carried the package outside of his home and opened it in his back yard, causing it to detonate, inflicting injuries to him, and blasting a hole through a wood frame and fence,” the U.S. attorney’s office stated.

A second bomb was intended for a retired Alameda police sergeant who was involved in the search of Laverty’s home and his arrest in 2013, prosecutors said.

The man’s wife cut open the package, saw wires sticking out and threw it to the ground, where it exploded and injured her eardrums, prosecutors said.

Laverty has a long history of arrests and convictions for drug, gun and arson offenses. He was convicted of mailing an explosive devise with the intent to injure or kill, possession of an unregistered firearm and using an explosive during the commission of a felony.
