12 arrested in connection with deadly Halloween party attack

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Twelve people have been arrested in connection with a gang-related shooting at a Halloween-themed birthday party in Long Beach that killed three people and wounded nine others, authorities said Tuesday.

The suspects believed they were attacking members of a rival gang when they opened fire at a home in the Los Angeles suburb on Oct. 29, 2019, Police Chief Robert Luna said at a news conference.

The attackers drove to the home and three began shooting from an alley into a backyard crowded with 25 to 30 people, police said.

However, nobody at the party belonged to a gang, Luna said.

The shooting killed Maurice Poe Jr., 25, of Long Beach; Melvin Williams II, 35, of Gardena; and Ricardo Torres, 28, of Inglewood.

Ten people were arrested on warrants around Southern California last week and two others already were in custody on unrelated charges of murder and attempted murder, Luna said.

Eight have been charged with murder with special circumstances that make them eligible for the death penalty if convicted, Los Angeles County prosecutors said.
