"I didn't make this up out of thin air. The
candidates themselves quite explicitly
advertise it in their candidate statements and
in their campaign brochures. It is no
coincidence that St. Matthias figures
prominently in the resumes of council
candidates Elba Guerrero, Elba Romo and
Andres Molina. Mario Gomez is reportedly
managing the Romo/Molina campaign with the
help of Mr. Leo Vargas, a registered sex
offender. You would think the candidates would
be outraged".

"...is it any coincidence that the Archdiocese
now finds itself in an embarrassing situation
dealing with the fallout of a registered sex
offender volunteer at the local Catholic
elementary school who happens to be related
to a councilman who is an active parishioner,
whose political team is also active in St.
Matthias and blatantly state their connections
to the parish?

See for yourself, Mr. Tamberg........It is the
candidates themselves who claim to be
connected to the parish/school of St. Matthias".

Elba Romo, City Clerk

Another council candidate, Elba Guerrero, who
is "enthusiastically" endorsed by mayor
Noguez, would beg to differ with you about ties
to St. Matthias church. She lists in her candidate
statement that
she has "Extensive involvement
with St. Matthias parish activities
". So what? If
she cloaks herself with the church's mantle,
why then does she not object to the hypocrisy
and questionable ethics of Noguez, her political
Padrino? they all want to make us believe they
have high ethical and moral standards because
they are connected to St. Matthias.

Campaign Watch  - Political Campaigns Using The Catholic Church
Huntington Park, CA (January, 2005): The Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles emailed a statement to
WatchOurCity.com regarding last week's revelation that a relative of Councilman Mario Gomez, a
convicted child molester and registered sex offender listed on Megan's Law website, was a volunteer a
St. Matthias Elementary School. Part of the response states:
" ......your editorial, which offers no proof for the alleged ties between political figures and church personnel,
is utterly outrageous and without factual foundation. It calls into question the very purpose of your
website. Is it about safety and public awareness or just opportunistic and shameless politics? One might
reasonably guess it is the latter."
(see full comments from the Archdiocese)

Council candidate Andy Molina, Elba Romo's running mate, reports a $500 contribution from the
"church Secretary" at St. Mathias Catholic Church, according campaign statements filed in the city
clerk's office.

Who's telling the truth, the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles or Huntington Park's elected officials?
